Awards & Accomplishments

 
UPCS has been widely regarded as a national model for its success at closing the achievement gap and its innovative partnership with Clark. Some of its most recent awards and achievements are listed below:
 
All graduates go to college: Every student from each of UPCS’ three graduating classes has attended college, with over 80% enrolling at 4-year institutions including such prestigious institutions as Brown, Georgetown, Trinity, Tufts and Clark.  Nearly all of these students are a member of the first generation in his or her family to graduate from college.
 
For 6 consecutive years, all but one student passed the MCAS, the state mandated graduation exam: Not only is failure not an option at this inner city school, but scoring advanced and proficient are the goal. Since 2002, UPCS has been the highest performing non-selective urban high school in Massachusetts on this exam. All but two students passed on the first try, and nearly all of the students scored advanced and proficient in each category (84% in math and 84% in English).
 
Spotlight Award, New England League of Middle Schools: UPCS was selected for this award in 2006 because of its "record of powerful learning for young adolescents." The award noted the school's excellence in collaborative leadership, positive student and teacher interactions, hands-on classrooms, appropriate grouping practices, and effective parent involvement."
 
Model School, International Center for Leadership in Education & the Council of Chief State School Officers: UPCS has been recognized as one of the most successful high schools in the nation by the International Center for Leadership in Education and the Council of Chief State Schools Officers in 2005 and 2006. 
 
Dispelling the Myth Award, Education Trust: UPCS received a “Dispelling the Myth Award” from the Education Trust in November, 2005 for showing the the achievement gap can, indeed, be closed. UPCS is one of three schools profiled in an Education Trust publication called "The Power to Change: High Schools that Help All Students Achieve."
 
Outstanding Adolescent Literacy Program, Alliance for Excellent Education: UPCS is one of a small number of excellent adolescent literacy programs highlighted by the Alliance for Excellent Education, the leading national advocacy organization in this area. Top Ranked High School in New England and Top Ranked High-Poverty School in the Nation, Newsweek Magazine: In May of 2005, Newsweek ranked the top 100 high schools in the nation, with UPCS at #68.  UPCS was the highest rated school in New England and the highest poverty school on the list.
 
Breakthrough High School, National Association of Secondary School Principals: UPCS  was named a Breakthough High School and was featured in the January 2005 edition of Principal Leadership Magazine. Click here to read the article.
 
Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Partnership Award for Campus-Community Collaboration: In 2004, Clark University won the inaugural Jimmy and Roslyn Carter Partnership Award for Massachusetts. The award recognized the University Park Partnership, the outstanding campus-community collaboration between Clark University and the Main South Community Development Corporation. UPCS is a crown jewel of this partnership.
 
Highest Performing Urban High School in Massachusetts, MassINC: In a 2003 report titled, Head of the Class: Characteristics of Higher Performing High School in Massachusetts, MassINC, a leading policy research organization, named the University Park Campus School the highest performing non-selective, urban, high school in the state, recognizing its success at raising achievement levels for all students, without significant attrition, in the process.
