UPCS Scope and Sequence
Because of UPCS’ small size, untracked classes, and focus on college-preparation, curricular options for students are quite limited. Students take English, math, social studies and science every year and Spanish in grades nine through eleven.
All courses in grades nine through twelve are honors level or higher. AP courses are often taught as a differentiated strand within the honors course in which all students participate. The teacher assigns extra work for AP students and may schedule after-school sessions in addition to the regular course time to prepare for the test.
Students have no curricular choice in grades seven to ten and have limited electives at the school in grades eleven and twelve. Clark University serves as the schools elective program. Students in their junior and senior year may take one course per semester at Clark. Since students can choose from the entire university catalog, UPCS is able to offer students a far more robust set of options than high schools which are several times larger.
Note: This scope and sequence includes only those courses which meet every day. Students take specialty classes such as art, music, physical education, and health on Wednesday morning while the core academic faculty meets for common planning time. Those courses are not included here.
