Flexible Deployment of Staff, Time and Other Resources

Flexibility in Deployment of Teaching Resources: Nearly all faculty members have multiple certifications which enables them to be deployed flexibly in response to student needs. This is especially necessary in math and science, where nearly every teacher teaches multiple subjects because of the small size of the school.

Flexibility in Scheduling: At UPCS, staffing and other resources are designed to be flexible and responsive to student needs. The school provides the core teaching staff with common meeting time by simultaneously offering supplemental courses taught by people from outside the school. These courses include art and music classes led by itinerant district teachers, mini-seminars delivered by Clark University faculty, special projects organized by Clark students, and community-service internships.

The schedule at UPCS is not immutable. Nearly every year, mid-course adjustments are made in response to student needs. One year, in response to the tenth-grade math teacher's concerns about student preparedness for the upcoming state exam, the school leader created a weekly two-hour long math skill-building block staffed by four teachers for additional small-group instruction.

Do What Makes Sense for the Students: No element of the program at UCPS is sacrosanct if it does not make sense for our students. The leader and faculty constantly ask the question "what is best for the students?" and then organize the resources necessary to achieve that.
